One summer day in 2003, we spotted a "For Rent" sign on a busy street corner in Fallbrook, California. We were not in the market to open a retail shop, and the space we first saw didn't work out...but an idea took form and led us to our Main Street location in Fallbrook's Historic Downtown shopping district.
We spent three months overcoming obstacles and fixing up a tired space. We advertised a Grand Opening with a celebrity design guest. No soft opening for us; it turned out to be our first day of business.
Michael Payne, from HGTV's Designing for the Sexes, had just released his first book, Let's Ask Michael. He was thrilled to drive from his home in Los Angeles for a Sunday afternoon presentation, book signing and spot of tea in Fallbrook.
What a kickoff! The store was packed and Michael was a wonderful guest. We were on our way. To read more about our first five years, scroll down to "Starting at Home."
My, How we have changed!
We spent the summer clearing out the inventory with a great sale and then closed for ten days to complete our redesign work...we reopened on September 6th with our new buying mission. We wanted to have a special guest for our 2nd opening and since we were going green, we invited our favorite eco-celebrity, Ed Begley, Jr. He "wowed" the crowd with his great tips, easy-going style and sensibility. A book signing, organic wine, food and a really nice, funny and smart guest...what a day it was!
Our buying mission is to find interesting items that are functional and fit into one or more of the following categories:
recycled, sustainable, reclaimed, organic, vintage, locally-made, fair-trade
Starting At Home
At Home on Main Street began with a simple goal; to be a source for large-scale accessories, lamps, candles, design books and accent furniture. As a redesign specialist, I (Meet Marie Kinnaman) noticed that many of my clients didn't have enough lighting, and often used too many little things as accessories. I wanted to provide options for what I saw as a void in many of my clients' homes.
